HED 712 - Research on the College Student (3 credits).
This residential (in-person) course is targeted to master’s and doctoral students in higher education/ student affairs roles. It offers a comprehensive examination of research on college student access, persistence, and success, with particular attention to students from underrepresented and marginalized communities. Students explore who attends, persists, and graduates from U.S. colleges and universities, and engage with leading theoretical models on college access, choice, and student persistence/retention. Drawing on national databases and scholarship, the course investigates the role of ideology, capital, habitus, and systemic educational inequities in informing and shaping students' educational pathways and outcomes (e.g., sense of belonging, persistence, graduation) and how to promote conditions for student success and mental wellbeing.
