Course Description:
Policies, programs in mental health and developmental disabilities fields. Deinstitutionalization,
community-based services. Special mental health issues related to poverty, ethnicity, gender, and
sexual orientation. Policy analysis. Prereq.SWK611or consent of instructor.
Additional Course Description:
This course builds upon the student’s foundation in social welfare policy. Content focuses on the analysis of policies and programs in the mental health arena and the processes for policy advocacy, policy development and implementation in mental health. Special attention is given to public understandings of mental illness, stigma, and how these shape policies.
