Independent doctors in San Diego are becoming a thing of the past. Unless you are with Kaiser, Sharp or Scripps, it may be difficult to sustain a reasonable practice. Even if you are with those health systems, you may be struggling to build a practice due to the oversupply of GIs in the region. As you know, it takes approximately 40K patient lives to support one GI, and in San Diego, I suspect we have at least one GI for every 10K-15K patient lives. Prior to accepting a position in San Diego, ask yourself the following:How busy will you really be? Will you be able to support your life style? Will you be able to afford a reasonable home based on the income you earn? Will you be able to enroll your children in private schools?
