This is an exciting time to join our whānau at Ara Poutama Aotearoa! We have just released Hōkai Rangi, our departmental strategy for the next five years. Recognising that the current approach to care in custody and the community is not working for Māori and significant change is required. This change is focused on uplifting and managing the wellbeing of people in our care and their whānau; based on partnering with iwi, hapū, whānau, and hāpori Māori to achieve better outcomes.

  • 1 x Senior Advisor – fixed term/secondment (8 months), full time 
  • Salary range –  $110,091 to $155,423
In this role you will develop and influence new ways of operating and build close working relationships with iwi and hapū. You will provide sound advice and strategic thinking to the General Manager Rautaki Māori and the Manager, Māori Partnerships. This will extend to areas of organisational strategy, governance, partnerships, risk management and other matters relating to the effective operation of the Department as a Treaty partner, and all aspects of the way it works with Māori. You will take an integrated approach to policy, service delivery and evaluation across the range of programmes and services in our organisation.  The work is dynamic and diverse, exposing you to a wide range of issues requiring critical thinking and strong relationship skills. 
We’re looking for people who have the following skills and experience:
  • Advanced written communication skills including proven experience in drafting reports, briefings, memos, and/or policy
  • Strong strategic analysis, planning and experience in translating this in an operational context
  • A commitment to kaupapa Māori and to improving outcomes for Māori
  • Ability to operate in a Māori setting, along with a commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi
  • Established networks with iwi partners and community groups and strong stakeholder engagement skills – proven to build trust and confidence
  • Experience in policy / service development / the delivery of services to people in our care and management.
  • Sound knowledge of the machinery of government
  • Initiative and ability to operate independently as well as supporting other team members’ growth and development.
  • You will be passionate in driving initiatives that will enable a reduction in re-offending, with a specific focus on Māori, In addition you will contribute to increasing our te ao Māori expertise across the Department
