With our extensive range of facilities and environments, we have opportunities across many diverse areas including Biological, Bioprocess automation, developing new processes and improving reliability and robustness of processes.Overview: Biotechnology Solutions (BTS) within Animal Health is responsible for remediation and improvement of processes of commercial vaccines and project management for all types of projects related to process and analytics in the manufacturing and quality space. BTS Upper Hutt is responsible for process development of production processes for bacterial antigens as well as vaccine manufacturing (formulations) processes for new vaccines (R&D pipeline) and technology transfers. The BTS UPH team works closely with Manufacturing, Quality and R&D colleagues worldwide. The function of the Bioprocess Engineer at BTS UPH falls within the Animal Health Science and Technology department which is part of the manufacturing division. The main function of the Bioprocess Engineer is process improvement, development and troubleshooting of production processes, as well as management of projects or project deliverables within larger projects.The Bioprocessing Engineer, Vaccine Manufacture sits within the BTS organization and reports to BTS Lead, Upper Hutt site. What will you do:Within a multidisciplinary environment you will cooperate with (local and international) colleagues from Manufacturing, Quality, R&D, Regulatory and Supply Chain. You will be responsible for:Planning, executing, and reporting of trials/experiments related to an investigational project or process development.Participating in and leading projects focused on development, optimization, and transfer of vaccine production processes from seeding stage to completion of vaccine production including transport studies.Technology development; new alternatives for our current processes of fermentation, downstream processing and formulation of vaccines.Providing process engineering and technical knowledge in projects and research on production related topics.Interacting closely with fellow scientists and specialists within own and other departments.Participating in Global BTS projects and aligning with stakeholders from other departments.Documentation Maintain all documentation in accordance with Company and relevant quality standards.EHSEnsure all hazards and environmental aspects in their area are identified, documented, assessed, and controlled in accordance with EHS procedures.Ensure compliance with legal and other requirements.Assist in the development of EHS objectives, targets, and performance indicators, establish EHS improvement projects and review progress.Ensure all employees receive such EHS information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to perform their work in a manner that is safe and without significant risk to health or the environment.Ensure compilation of EHS reports as required by senior management, regulatory authorities and others.Identify and record EHS monitoring requirements and implement appropriate monitoring.Ensure scheduled audits and inspections are conducted and necessary corrective actions are developed and completed.What should you have: MSc or PhD in or related to bioprocess engineering, virology, bacteriology, or microbiology.Experience in working in a Biopharmaceutical production or Bioprocessing environment.Theoretical and practical knowledge regarding upstream processing and downstream processing technology for biopharmaceuticals at laboratory and manufacturing scale.Good organizational and documentation skills with ability to balance between details and overview.Preferably quality management and GMP knowledge in the biopharmaceutical industry.Team player, persuasive, decisive; flexible, accurate and proactive.Able to analyse complex situations and find adequate solutions.Experience in SAP and Lean Six Sigma (MPS) is an advantage.Hands-on scientist who is able to cope with temporary stress and deadlines.Fluent in English in speaking and writing; Who we areWe are known as Merck & Co., Inc., Rahway, New Jersey, USA in the United States and Canada and MSD everywhere else.
