We serve a population of approximately 259,000 for the major population centres of Tauranga, Katikati, Te Puke, Whakatāne, Kawerau and Ōpōtiki. Te Whatu Ora Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty is one of the Bay of Plenty’s largest employers with over 4000 staff.

The Tauranga Hospital Emergency Department (ED) medical specialist team has grown rapidly over the past few years in response to the growth in population and service demand. We are committed to delivering excellent regional emergency medicine care for the people of the Bay of Plenty.
Our Emergency Department sees a diverse case mix with over 55,000 presentations per annum of which 20% is paediatric. The population of the Western Bay of Plenty is continuing to grow rapidly with high numbers of older adults retiring to the Bay alongside growth in industry and commerce attracting younger people and families to relocate to the region.
Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty has a Māori population of around 22% with the largest number of Māori living in the Western Bay of Plenty. Our organisation and department are committed to improving Māori health equity and to working with Hauora a Toi Iwi to ensure services meet Te Tiriti expectations and improve health outcomes.
The department is accredited for 24 months ACEM advanced training and has a strong focus on education and development of the emergency medicine, nursing and allied health workforce.
We also have an active simulation training programme and established on-site links to the Auckland University regional clinical campus.
