The New Zealand’s MetService Research and Innovation Hub is a core science-based project consultancy, numerical modelling and Machine Learning powerhouse within MetService, supply analytical solutions in meteorology and oceanography both internally and to customers nationally and internationally.
We passionately believe in rigorous scientific method and in applying the latest information technology to data services. The Research and Innovation Hub occupies several niche atmospheric and ocean consultancy and service roles and has a rapidly growing forecast and hindcast sector.
Our changing climate, increasing impacts from weather and changes in the way the public consume weather information means that way MetService engages in the future will continue to evolve, and the Research and Innovation Hub provides a key capability in maintaining the relevance of MetService with regards to the science we apply.
In this role you will work with scientists and external clients
To undertake GIS data analysis, relevant code development, scientific research and technical report writing supporting the wider modelling (deterministic and ML) requirements as well as various project consultancy and development projects. Tell stories through data visualisation using Global Mapper, QGIS, ArcGIS, Surfer to support decision making on NZ Weather resilience. Maintaining and update our GIS databases. You will come to us with:
A tertiary or post-graduate qualification (M.Sc. or PhD level) in a relevant physical science Experience using use GIS software (e.g., Global Mapper, QGIS, ArcGIS, Surfer) Working with and organising large geophysical datasets General programming ability, including proficiency in Python (preferred) or Matlab and experience in working in Linux environment. Ability to analyse and critically assess numerical models and observational data. Strong technical and scientific report writing in English, with the ability to communicate complex science to a range of audiences. Why join us?
