About Us/He kōrero mō mātou
The University of Otago is New Zealand’s 2nd largest university, with over 20,000 students and 4,000 full-time equivalent staff. Otago’s Department of Chemistry is the oldest Chemistry department in New Zealand (established in 1871) and teaches ca 450 full-time students at undergraduate and postgraduate (research) levels.
The Department has a long-standing international reputation as a leader in research and education. There are currently 15 full-time academic staff, 10 administrative and technical staff, and 6 research staff including postdoctoral fellows. In addition, Plant and Food Research staff (a Crown Research Institute) work within the Department. Staff and students are accommodated in office, laboratory, and workshop space across six floors in the adjoining Science 2 and Mellor Laboratories buildings.
Our researchers are actively involved with New Zealand’s Centres for Research Excellence (CoREs): MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, Dodd-Walls Centre for Photonic and Quantum Technologies, Maurice Wilkins Centre for Molecular Biodiscovery, The Riddet Institute, and Coastal People: Southern Skies.
The role/Te mahi
We are seeking to appoint a full-time Health and Safety Compliance Officer to facilitate compliance with the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO), Health & Safety at Work (HSW) and Radiation Safety legislation.
In this role you will:
• Work with department staff and students to ensure health and safety compliance requirements are understood and practiced.
• Monitor and foster the development of good laboratory practices including housekeeping, storage, labelling, record keeping, risk assessment and hazard identification.
• Provide induction health & safety and HSNO training for new department members, and refresher training, as required.
• Investigate events and incidents, working with the University Health, Safety and Wellness team.
• Maintain good records of all H&S and HSNO-related training, registers of hazardous substances and biological/risk goods held on-site, and lists of emergency contacts.
• Keep up to date with the relevant legislation, and provide clear and accurate advice on related issues to the Departmental Health and Safety Committee.
• Liaise with the Health, Safety and Wellbeing team regarding the management of hazardous substances and provide expert guidance to the wider University, as required.
• Liaise with the relevant external University staff to ensure the smooth running of the Department, including its buildings, in relation to health, safety, wellbeing, and security.

To be successful in this role, you will:
• Hold a tertiary qualification in chemistry or similar.
• Have relevant experience working in a laboratory, preferably with a research component.
• Have knowledge of HSNO and HSW legislation, and health & safety issues associated with working in a laboratory.
• Have a strong commitment to developing a safety culture in laboratories.
• Have good communication and interpersonal skills, and a willingness to support staff/students at any time that H&S concerns arise.
• Be highly organised, with the ability to manage multiple demands while maintaining a high level of attention to detail and safe working practices.
