Te mahi/The role
As a Kaiārahi (Assistant Programme Coordinator), you will support the delivery of our Tū Tauira Hauora programme. This programme is designed to foster the retention and achievement of Māori students pursuing health sciences degrees at the University of Otago.
Your responsibilities will include providing tailored academic and wellbeing support, coordinating captivating professional/cultural development events and academic tutorials, and forging meaningful connections (whakawhanaungatanga) with/between Māori students, university staff, and community groups.
Key tasks:
• Identifying and assessing support needs of Māori students within the Health Science Division's degree programmes.
• Identifying and recruiting skilled tutors/demonstrators to enhance student learning and development.
• Tracking and monitoring the progress of Māori students, ensuring accurate and up-to-date student records and data management.
• Contributing to the planning, coordination, and successful implementation of hui, wānanga and professional development opportunities for Māori students.
• Reporting on student progress to the MHWDU, providing valuable insights for program improvement and development.
• Encouraging student participation and utilisation of services and programs offered by the Māori Centre and other University staff.
Your valuable contributions will extend beyond day-to-day operations, as you will participate in monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on the Tū Tauira Hauora programme. You will also have the opportunity to lend your expertise to other exciting MHWDU programmes and collaborative team initiatives.

We are looking for a positive, friendly, approachable person who can relate and build relationships with tertiary students, staff, Māori communities and health workforce organisations.
Successful candidates will also have:
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively across multiple projects.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong verbal and written communication, including report writing, skills.
• Experience planning and facilitating activities and events.
• The ability to meet deadlines and complete tasks in a timely and professional manner.
• Competency in use of the Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel for report generation and analysis.
• Some flexibility for after-hours work (agreed in advance).
• Proficiency in te reo Māori me ōnā tikanga is desired but not essential.
• A tertiary qualification and demonstrated understanding of the tertiary sector is desired but not essential.

This is a fixed term position for one year. The role is available part-time 0.5 FTE (18.75 hours) minimum, to full-time (37.5 hours), negotiable.
