The Role

We are seeking an academic maths learning advisor who is passionate about increasing the success and retention of a wide range of tertiary students. As part of the Learning Services team, you will assess student learning needs across a range of contexts and work collaboratively with Ara staff to deliver effective maths support. Learning advisors work with students and staff in a range of modes (including small groups, classes, 1:1 and flexible learning environments), providing maths/numeracy skills and advice that support positive student outcomes.


The following will contribute significantly to your success in the role: 

  • Formal tertiary qualifications
  • Demonstrated sensitivity and responsiveness to the needs of a diverse student population
  • Experience working with youth and/or Māori and Pasifika students
  • Demonstrated experience of applying current ako, learning and teaching best practice
  • Experience delivering focused, quality assistance to scaffold students’ skills in maths/numeracy
  • Effective interpersonal and written communication skills 

Additionally, you will have some combination of the following: 

  • Experience teaching maths/numeracy to adults
  • Advanced digital literacy skills necessary to undertake all aspects of online learning development and delivery
  • Experience in a tertiary education environment is desirable but not essential
