The Team: What we do

Canterbury Health Laboratories is the largest medical laboratory in the South Island and is a secondary/tertiary referral centre. Our laboratory is open 24 hours a day, providing timely results to our clinicians to ensure our patients are getting the right treatment, at the right time.

Our COVID-19 testing response team works across our Registration, Core Haematology and Virology teams and is involved in the registration, pre-analytical processing and testing of COVID-19 samples. We’re an experienced team of laboratory professionals who are passionate about providing quality care to the Canterbury community and continued education and professional development to our people.

We’re looking to expand our team with dedicated and motivated NZ registered Laboratory professionals.

We currently have a range of opportunities within our 24/7 service:

  • Full-time, fixed-term opportunity for approximately six months for a Medical Laboratory Technician or Preanalytical Technician
  • Various casual opportunities for Medical Laboratory Scientists, Technicians and Preanalytical Technicians

The Role: Where you fit in

As part of our team, you’ll be responsible for the following:

  • Providing technical and scientific support to our COVID-19 testing response
  • Providing a high-quality service to clients
  • Carrying out techniques to a high standard according to laboratory protocol, and identifying and actioning results efficiently
  • Effectively and efficiently utilising the laboratory information system to register patients, input data, and access results

Your skills will include the following:

  • Adaptability and flexibility to work across different areas of the laboratory and varying shifts in a 24/7 roster
  • Excellent computer skills and attention to detail, with the ability to learn new systems quickly
  • Technical or scientific experience in medical laboratory science within a medical diagnostic laboratory is highly desirable for Technicians and Scientists, and experience in medical laboratory science or related healthcare discipline is desirable for Preanalytical Technicians
  • Previous medical laboratory experience in specimen registration or molecular virology is also advantageous
  • Relevant NZ registration (or eligibility to obtain) with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand

To be successful in joining our COVID-19 response team, you will be a highly motivated team player with excellent interpersonal skills and able to work as part of a team as well as independently. In addition, you will be organised and efficient with effective time management and communication skills.
