Receptionist/Administration Assistant – Entry Level, Hamilton Public Defence Service


We are looking for a Receptionist/ Administration Assistant to join our team in our Hamilton office.  We are a collegial and professional office with around 24 legal and support staff.  You will be joining an experienced and supportive team who have a genuine interest in sharing knowledge and supporting one-another in an enjoyable, busy and sometimes challenging environment. 

The Public Defence Service (PDS) is New Zealand’s largest criminal law practice, providing high quality legal advice and representation in a full range of criminal cases. Aimed at helping people access justice, the PDS promotes the values of respect, integrity, service and the delivery of excellent service to its clients. 

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • Strong communication skills both verbally and written
  • To be a self-starter with proven initiative
  • To be a team player
  • To be experienced and efficient in a range of administration functions including typing and data entry
  • To be keen to learn about the world of criminal defence law

As the first point of contact for our office you will need to be personable and well presented. The role is busy and your key tasks will include all reception duties, dealing with a busy inbox, setting up client files, accurately processing disclosure, assisting our legal secretaries, supporting the office, photocopying, collating and filing legal documents..

Whilst you may have already gained some experience in a professional environment that is customer driven, and been involved in general office administration tasks this is a chance for you to get in at the ‘ground floor’ and establish a great career path for yourself.

As a key team member at the PDS you will have access to a very successful three-month induction programme for PDS administration staff.  You will also be able to attend monthly training sessions.

Salary will depend on skills and experience and commences at $43,931 (85% of band).
