The Role
We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Draftsperson who can also act as a Supervisor to a Junior Draftsperson. This supervison element will be about 10% to 15% of the role and mainly involve drawing reviews. In addition to the junior draftsman the drawing office has two virtually full-time and relatively independent senior drafting contractors, and another two contractors that are part time.
The main role is mechanical engineering and the company’s core business is conveying equipment. However over recent years they have grown quite substantially by taking on civil works too. Although they subcontract it all out they do have Project Managers that handle this side of the work.
In additon to drafting, this role will also liaise internally with the company’s fulltime contractor Civil/Structural Engineer because they are providing structures that have to be professionally designed and signed off to meet engineering standards.
You will create fabrication drawings which will then require you to liaise closely in-house with the Workshop Manager and workshop staff (e.g., fabricators, welders etc.), and with the installation team too.
This role is much more than just drafting too. For example a typical project for you will include concept work, working with 3D Scanned site data, site measure-ups, detailed design drafting and specification of equipment and layouts, and in-house manufacturing. Throughout you will also be doing enigneering liason and project management with a client, civil/structural engineers and building engineers, and with civil contractors at project installation stage.
A client may procure and have installed some of their own specialist equipment as part of the project too which you will incorporate into designs. There is also all the ancillary equipment the company will build and have installed like walkways, handrails, ladders, and whatever else is required to service and operate the equipment.
Short Trips away: From time to time, you will travel to a client sight to do a site measure up. This will typically be just a day trip in NZ, or 2 to 3 days away if in Australia.
Experience with using 3D Laser Scanner data an advantage: Often the company will get a third party to do a 3D laser scan of a plant so that new equipment can be designed and positioned accurately. So, it would be helpful if you have some experience using 3D Laser Scanned data previously.
You don’t need material handling experience to apply: The company are open to someone learning their materials handling industry sector. As long as you have an ability to pick up new things and learn, have a good attitude and work ethic, then the company are likely to be able to provide training.
There is also an extensive library of projects undertaken to draw from so you will have plenty of examples to draw from.
