The Department of Pathology is one of eight departments within the Dunedin School of Medicine Dunedin. The Department is actively involved in undergraduate medical and health science student teaching and supervision of postgraduate research students.
The Department houses several internationally recognised research groups and has six major research areas including; Cancer Biology, Clinical Pathology, Development, Genetics and Epigenetics, Haematology and Immunotherapy.
Teaching laboratories in the Department of Pathology run for several sessions each week during term time, and are fundamental to teaching in the Medical Laboratory Science Professional programme and BBiomedSci papers PATH201, PATH301 and PATH 302.
The role/Te mahi
Our team of Technical Staff work closely with staff and students to provide technical support for the Department’s teaching and research.
The primary focus of this role is to:
• Coordinate and prepare all undergraduate and professional programme practical classes run by the Department of Pathology.
• Oversee purchasing and resourcing for all laboratories, including maintaining inventories and equipment, and designing lab set-up.
• Supervise teaching laboratory technical staff.
• As time permits, to provide technical support to Researchers, Compliance Manager and Department Health and Safety Officer.
• Take responsibility for day-to-day duties of technical staff including planning and management of work demands through appropriate allocation of tasks.
• Take responsibility for monitoring, ordering and maintaining stocks of reagents, biologicals, consumables and chemicals required for undergraduate laboratories.

We are looking for a self-motivated individual with:
• A minimum of one of the following qualifications:
o BSc (Hons)
o BMLSc (or equivalent)
o BBioMedSci (Hons)
o MSc (preferably in biological science or laboratory medicine)
• Relevant research or diagnostic laboratory experience.
• Experience in supervising staff.
• Working knowledge of basic experimental techniques.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Ability to prioritize work and perform effectively without supervision.
• Strongly preferred: at least At least 5 years’ experience in laboratory procedures, previous experience in the medical laboratory science profession and/or previous experience in an undergraduate teaching laboratory.
