Job Requisition ID 12644

New Zealand Police has a position available for a proactive and energetic solicitor to join the Lower North and South Legal team, based in Wellington. This is a busy role providing advice to frontline Police officers on a wide range of legal issues.

The work is diverse and interesting, with a focus on providing practical legal advice to officers on matters arising in the course of criminal investigations. Legal advisors also regularly deal with information law issues and manage civil litigation files. You will therefore need to be an experienced legal advisor, preferably having worked in an in-house legal role or as a litigator. Public sector experience and/or experience working in criminal prosecutions would be a particular advantage.

The position is currently a Grade 21 position reporting to Manager Legal: Lower North and South. However, consideration will be given to appointing a more junior lawyer to the role, at a lower band, if they are considered the best candidate for the role.

Your ability to work independently and prioritise work will be important.

The successful applicant will possess a LLB, preferably from a New Zealand University, and a current New Zealand practising certificate (or eligibility to obtain one without undertaking further study). You will also be required to provide a sample of your legal writing, a copy of your official transcript, and undergo a reference and security check and drug testing prior to an offer of employment being made.

Police values workforce diversity and understands that our people are our most valuable asset. This is a fulltime position, based in Wellington. However, Police has a flexible employment options policy in place and would consider candidates seeking flexible employment arrangements for this position.

Skills & Experience:

  • Capable lawyer with experience as either in-house legal counsel and/or as a litigator
  • Expertise in providing advice on criminal law, information law and/or civil litigation or a high achieving lawyer with proven ability to quickly develop expertise in new areas
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake legal research and provide written and oral legal advice that is accurate, clear and concise
  • Demonstrated ability to work to short timeframes and manage competing priorities
  • Experienced in dealing with clients and providing legal advice with limited supervision
