An opportunity exists at Timaru Hospital, whereyou’ll enjoy a semi-autonomous role, with our three other generalpaediatricians, developing a greater community focus all the while supported byexcellent hospital infrastructure.
Paediatric Service at Timaru Hospital
The work involves general paediatrics inits broadest sense – from neonates to adolescents, with a large outpatientfocus. This is a ‘hands on’ role andinpatient numbers are small.
With no registrars, we have junior doctors who areinspired to learn alongside a trainee intern. You will work closely with a small Child Development Team and get toknow community providers well. You’ll bejoining a team of skilled professionals, motivated to make a difference, whilebeing supported by good clinical systems, including high standards of obstetriccover.
Call commitments involve 1 or 2 nights a week with 11 weekends per year. Neonatal care is delivered in a Level 1 unit with 2 high dependency cots for stabilisation prior to transfer. We have recently built a Transitional Care Unit that offers 5 transitional care rooms for mum and baby. We have aspirations to increase this capability over the next few years. Our paediatric ward has been recently refurbished to offer 8 beds. There is excellent tertiary support for the majority of paediatric sub-specialities within 2 hours drive.
Te Whatu Ora - South Canterbury isresponsible for the delivery of services throughout the South Canterbury regionand Timaru Hospital (131 beds) serves a district population of approximately50,000 based in a General Hospital Facility, (which has just commenced asignificant refurbishment programme), providing our local community with suchcritical 24/7 services as ED, ICU/CCU,General, Orthopaedic, & ENT Surgery, O&G, Psychiatry, Geriatrics,Oncology & Palliative Care, Internal Medicine and Paediatrics.
