Te tūranga / The role
Reporting into Amotaketake - Manager Office of the Chief Māori Officer, as Pou Tikanga, you'll lead the organisation in upholding tikanga Māori. The role will be diverse in that one day you will be blessing a new community park, to opening citizen ceremonies, to supporting the Mayor to a Pōwhiri at the marae, to running Pōwhiri in the office, to undertaking tikanga in our community housing or infrastructure projects. No two days will be the same!
You'll provide expert leadership and advice to develop, implement and refine tikanga best practice standards and strategies. You'll really help us to lift the tikanga capability of all staff and offer your expertise to help us prioritise and formulate a realistic plan to make it happen.
You'll work in a range of settings including providing advice to Council and supporting our internal teams to work safely within Te Ao Māori.
Mōu ake / You:
We need someone who can bring a thorough understanding of what Tikanga means in different contexts, specifically as a Council with so many functions. We want a natural leader who has passion for what they're doing and knows how to build trusting relationships from the get-go.
You be able to naturally guide the way relationships are formed, provide ways for groups to interact, and even guide the way people identify themselves. Tikanga comes in many forms, and we want to weave it throughout our organisation in an authentic and appropriate way.
You'll ideally bring existing iwi relationships and a tertiary qualification in Mātauranga Māori, equivalent experience within te ao Māori or experience delivering tikanga within an organisation. Endorsement from mana whenua for your application is desirable to confirm your knowledge of the tikanga needed to embed here at WCC.
