About our team/Mō te tīma
The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Section in the Dunedin School of Medicine is part of the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health.
Our major teaching responsibility is the MB ChB course. We also convene the Postgraduate Diploma of Obstetrics and Medical Gynaecology, and Certificate in Women’s Health, which are particularly suitable for GPs, midwives and other primary care practitioners.
Our lecturers also contribute to the Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Bachelor of Pharmacy, and Midwifery Degree programmes as well as other postgraduate courses.
The role/Te mahi
We are seeking to appoint a Professional Practice Fellow to teach and co-ordinate the clinical skills teaching programmes for our Gynaecology teaching associates (GTA) clinical sessions to 4th, 5th and 6th year medical students.
You will report to the Convenor of the 5th year Obstetrics and Gynaecology clinical attachment, and undertake the day-to-day running of the GTA programme, as well as some teaching and course material development support to the 5th year programme overall.
Key tasks for this role include:
• Recruiting and training Gynaecological Teaching Associates (professional patients/volunteers recruited to enable medical students to gain experience of pelvic examination).
• Organising GTA teaching sessions.
• Teaching pelvic examination in a sensitive, patient-centred manner, with GTAs: speculum examination, bimanual examination, collection of cervical screening tests and genital swabs.
• Teaching tutorials in obstetrics and gynaecology related to this programme, particularly the introduction to pelvic examination using plastic gynae models in the 5th year clinical skills programme.
• Teaching into the ELM program as required.
Skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
Successful candidates will have:
• A healthcare professional qualification (with several years of clinical experience) e.g. Nursing, midwifery, medical or similar.
• Experience in Obstetrics, Gynaecology or Maternity care.
• Aptitude for effective teaching at tertiary level.
• Experience in using a range of computer software including Microsoft Office.
• An ability to relate well to students is essential.
• Evidence of an ability to work well with students and staff from differing academic and cultural backgrounds and at all levels of the institution.
• A commitment to upholding values, tikanga, kawa and traditions as guided by Ngāi Tahu, who are mana whenua in the region.
